What you’ll need

  • MIG or flux-core welder (a 120 V machine handles 10 ga)
  • Angle grinder with a flap disc and wire wheel
  • Four or more clamps
  • Framing square and tape measure
  • Rubber mallet and a flat file
  • A helper for step 2 (optional)
  • Welding helmet, gloves, jacket and safety glasses

Finishing

  • The parts ship bare with a light oil film. Wipe them down with a degreaser before welding.
  • Grind off weld spatter, then sand or wire-wheel the surfaces you plan to paint.
  • Use an exterior metal primer and enamel, or a rust-converting paint; high-heat paint isn't needed.
  • Or skip paint and let it weather to a rust patina that matches a raw-steel fire pit.

Safety

  • Set the rack on level, firm ground. Load it from the bottom up and keep the stack even so it can't tip.
  • It isn't a ladder or a seat. Don't let kids climb it.
  • Keep a loaded rack at least 10 ft from a fire pit, grill or chiminea.
  • Stack firewood away from your house walls to keep insects out of the house.
