What you get

Good to knowBoth sit on the stove's own pot support, over a collar that closes off the riser top, and both lift off when you're done. The griddle plate even holds the box square while you weld it. Cut in Greenville, Texas.

What you’ll need

  • MIG or flux-core welder (a 120 V machine handles 10 ga)
  • Angle grinder with a flap disc
  • Two small clamps
  • Rubber mallet
  • Welding helmet, gloves, jacket and safety glasses

Finishing

  • The parts ship bare with a light oil film. Wipe them down with a degreaser before welding.
  • Grind the box and skirt corner welds smooth, and break the griddle plate's edges.
  • Season the griddle plate like cast iron: scrub it, wipe on a thin coat of high-smoke-point oil, and heat it on the stove until it stops smoking. Repeat two or three times.
  • Leave the box, skirt and collar bare, or paint their outsides with 1200 F high-heat paint.
  • Store the plate dry with a light coat of oil. The skirt nests inside the griddle box.

Safety

  • Outdoors only. A wood fire makes carbon monoxide: never cook in a tent, vehicle, camper, garage or under an awning.
  • Set the stove on level bare ground, gravel or stone first. Never use it on a table, a tailgate or a deck.
  • The plate, box, skirt and collar all get hot enough to burn. Use heat-resistant gloves and a long spatula.
  • Keep the cooking centered. Don't lean on the griddle or set heavy pans on its edge, and never move the stove while it's lit.
  • Scrape grease off as you cook. If grease catches fire, smother it with a lid or baking soda; never use water.
  • Many campgrounds and public lands ban wood fires and stoves during fire restrictions. Check before every fire.
  • Let everything cool completely before you take it off the stove or pack it.
