Lone Star Overland Fire Pan, 20 in

A raised fire pan for campsites with no fire ring. The fire burns on a solid steel floor 8 in off the ground, so the ground underneath stays unscorched and the cold ashes pack out. Ten 10 ga steel parts slot together in a couple of minutes with no tools and no welding, and come apart into a stack less than 1-1/2 in thick. Two half grates sit on the rim for cooking over the coals. Cut in Greenville, Texas.

What you’ll need

  • No tools needed
  • Heat-resistant gloves for the grates
  • A small shovel or scoop and a metal can for cold ashes (recommended)

Finishing

  • The parts ship bare with a light oil film. Wash the grates with soap and water before the first cook.
  • Season the grates like cast iron: a thin coat of high-smoke-point oil, heated over coals until it stops smoking.
  • Leave the pan bare to patina, or paint the outsides of the end panels and side walls with 1200 F high-heat paint.
  • Store it taken apart and dry, with a light coat of oil on the grates.

Safety

  • Outdoors only. Never use it under an awning, a tent fly or low branches.
  • Set it on level bare ground, gravel or rock, clear of dry grass. Never use it on a deck, a table, a tailgate or a truck bed.
  • Burn dry wood or charcoal only. Never use gasoline, and never add lighter fluid to a lit fire.
  • Keep the fire inside the pan and below the rim. Don't overload it with long logs that hang over the edge.
  • Everything gets hot enough to burn. Don't move it while lit, and keep kids and pets back.
  • Check fire restrictions and burn bans before every fire; a fire pan doesn't make a fire legal where fires are banned.
  • Put the fire dead out with water and stir it. Pack out the cold ashes where the rules ask you to.
