VG18 / FLAT-PACK KIT

Lone Star V Grill, 18 in

A V-shaped charcoal grill for the campsite, the hunting lease or the beach. Six 10 ga steel parts go together in a minute. The side plates hook onto the end plates and lock themselves by gravity, a center rib drops in, and the one-piece grate drops on. The V gathers the coals and a slit along the bottom feeds them air, so one chimney of charcoal cooks the whole grate. Cut in Greenville, Texas.

What you’ll need

  • No tools needed
  • Heat-resistant grill gloves for lifting the grate
  • A charcoal chimney starter (recommended)

Finishing

  • The parts ship bare with a light oil film. Wash the grate with soap and water before the first cook.
  • Season the grate like cast iron: wipe on a thin coat of high-smoke-point oil and heat it over coals until it stops smoking.
  • Paint the outside of the side and end plates with 1200 F high-heat paint, or leave them bare to patina.
  • Store it dry, taken apart, with a light coat of oil on the grate.

Safety

  • Outdoors only, on bare ground, gravel, stone or concrete. Ash and small embers fall through the slit at the bottom of the V, so never use it on a deck, a table, a tailgate or dry grass.
  • Burn charcoal or hardwood only. Never use gasoline, and never add lighter fluid to a lit fire.
  • The whole grill gets hot enough to burn. Lift the grate by its hand holes with heat-resistant gloves.
  • Let it cool completely before you take it apart, and soak the ashes before you throw them out.
  • Keep kids and pets back. Check local burn bans before every fire.
