A small fire pit built for s'mores night, with a mountain scape cut through all four sides. Ten laser-cut 10 ga steel parts lock together with box-jointed corners and tabs. It has a charcoal grate, an ash tray underneath, and notches in the rim that hold your roasting sticks over the coals. Cut in Greenville, Texas.

What you’ll need

  • MIG or flux-core welder (a 120 V machine handles 10 ga)
  • Angle grinder with a flap disc
  • Two or more small clamps and a small square
  • Rubber mallet
  • Welding helmet, gloves, jacket and safety glasses

Finishing

  • The parts ship bare with a light oil film. Wipe them down with a degreaser before welding.
  • Grind the rim and every edge smooth, since hands and roasting sticks go near it.
  • Paint the outside with a high-heat paint rated to 1200 F; leave the inside bare.

Safety

  • Outdoors only. Burning charcoal makes carbon monoxide; never use it indoors, in a garage or under a closed roof.
  • Burn only charcoal or small dry hardwood. Never use gel fuel, alcohol or other liquid fuels, and never add lighter fluid to a lit fire.
  • Use it only on stone, concrete, tile or metal. Never on wood, glass, plastic, a tablecloth or a wood deck.
  • Keep it away from umbrellas, overhangs and anything that burns. Check local burn bans first.
  • The steel and the ash tray get hot. Don't move it while lit, and let it cool completely; it can stay hot for an hour.
  • Supervise children with roasting sticks, and keep water or an extinguisher nearby.
